Ladders can be used in a wide range of different situations where extra height is required. They are best suited to low-risk jobs that can be completed within 30 minutes. If you need to work at height for longer than half an hour, consider an alternative height access solution (like a scaffold tower).
The best ladder for you depends on what sort of job you have in mind. If you just need an all-purpose ladder for doing odd bits of DIY around the house, you can get a domestic step ladder for a relatively low price, but if you're planning to use the ladder at work, you will need one that's EN131 Professional certified. If you need a ladder that's suitable for all sorts of different tasks, a combination ladder may be your best option.
The answer to this question depends on how high you need to reach. If you're buying a freestanding step ladder, you will need one that allows you to reach the desired point without standing on the top three steps. For leaning ladders, bear in mind that you will need a bit of extra length in order to observe the '1 in 4' rule. See How to Calculate the Ladder Length You Need for further guidance.
There are lots of safety rules to bear in mind when using a ladder. Before you attempt to do any work using a ladder, we strongly recommend that you familiarise yourself with this guidance from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). Once you have carried out a risk assessment and determined that a ladder is the right tool for the job, you should:
- Check your ladder for damage before you start using it
- Ensure the ladder's feet are firmly in contact with the ground
- Secure the ladder (see How to Stop Your Ladder from Slipping)
- Maintain three points of contact with the ladder at all times
- Avoid overloading the ladder or reaching too far to one side
Ladders are typically made of either aluminium, fibreglass or wood. Aluminium ladders are suitable for most work situations — they're sturdy yet lightweight, and they don’t rust. However, if you're working near electrical hazards, fibreglass ladders are preferable because they don't conduct electricity.
