Safety Cage Ladders - FAQs

What is the purpose of a safety cage ladder?

Safety cage ladders are designed to make ladders that exceed 2.5m tall safer for workers to use. As the name suggests, these ladders feature a fixed cage enclosure that acts as a safety guard. This helps to reduce the risk of the user falling backwards if they slip, as the cage provides them an opportunity to readjust their grip and secure themselves back on the ladder.

Are caged ladders safe?

Yes, a ladder with a safety cage makes working at height safer for workers when climbing ladders over 2.5m. However, recent updates to work at height regulations suggest additional personal fall protection equipment should also be used, such as safety harnesses, to further manage the risks associated with working at height on ladders.

The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) also warn that, "Users of fall arrest equipment inside a caged ladder should also be aware of the possibility of injury from striking the cage following a fall. The use of climbing helmets to reduce the risk of injury may need to be considered."
