This versatility makes combination ladders a little more complex to set up than standard, single-purpose ladders, but don’t fret! This blog will teach you how to use a combination ladder and break it down into easy steps.
Before you start setting up your combination ladder, always check the manufacturer’s instructions first as locking systems may vary slightly!
A-Frame Position Setup
- Lay the ladder flat on a level, firm and non-slip surface
- Unlock the hinge locks to allow the sections to move freely
- Spread the two main sections apart into an “A” shape
- Fully engage both hinge locks until they click/lock
- Make sure spreader bars (if present) are fully extended and locked
- Place it on level, stable ground
Extension (Straight) Ladder Position Setup
- Lay the ladder flat on a level, firm and non-slip surface
- Unlock the hinges on the bottom rung of the upper section
- Slide the top section up to the required height
- Lock hinges securely into place over the base section rungs
- Lift the ladder and lean it against a stable surface, ensuring the upper section faces away from the wall and following the 1-in-4 rule
Staircase Position Setup
- Measure the staircase and ensure the ladder is the correct size
- Place the ladder with the base on a lower step and the extension/inner section resting on a higher step
- Adjust the height of the inner section so that the ladder sits level
- Ensure all locking bars and hooks are fully engaged and secure
- Use the provided stabiliser bar at the base to keep everything secure
Combination LadderSafety Tips
- Do not stand on the top three rungs when the ladder is in A-frame mode.
- Do not exceed the maximum weight capacity.
- Do not place the ladder on a slippery or uneven surface.
- Do not twist or overreach, always keep your body centred between the side rails.
- Always ensure all locking mechanisms are fully engaged before climbing.
- Always recheck the locks if the configuration is changed.
- Always maintain adequate overlap between sections as indicated by safety labels.
