 triple extension ladder

Buying an extension ladder might seem confusing when you learn there are different types. We’re here to make things easier.

Types of extension ladders

There are two main types of extension ladders: double section and triple section.

These two categories are simple enough: double ladders have two sections, while triple ladders have three. Having more sections doesn't necessarily mean more height – we can provide both double and triple ladders with reach heights up to 10m – but three section ladders tend to be more compact when folded up. So, when you're choosing an extension ladder, be sure to consider how much storage space you have available.

Extension ladders are best suited for working at heights over 5m. Anything lower and you may be better off using a step ladder or a straight ladder.

Extension ladder materials

Extension ladders are typically made of either aluminium or fibreglass. The right choice for you will depend on the type of work you’re doing.

Fibreglass is non-conductive, meaning it’s the best ladder material if you’re working with electricity. Aluminium extension ladders should not be used when working with electricity because aluminium is a strong conductor, so you could suffer a shock.

However, aluminium ladders are cheaper and lighter than fibreglass ladders, so if you’re looking for a budget-friendly extension ladder that’s easy to transport, aluminium may be preferable (assuming you’re not an electrician!).

Domestic ladders vs trade ladders

Trade ladders are for those who work at height as part of their job: electricians, construction workers, and so on. They need to be hard-wearing, subject to regular inspections, and able to withstand heavy loads. So, if you work in the trades, or in industrial work, you will need a ladder certified to EN131 Professional standards.

If you do not work in the trades, but need a ladder for domestic DIY, you’ll need one certified as EN131 Non-Professional. You should also always check the maximum load limit of the ladder when making a purchase.
