Man climbing up a wooden loft ladder

If you want to access your attic more easily, installing a loft ladder is a great way to achieve this. A permanent loft ladder saves you the hassle of fetching and setting up a conventional ladder every time you want to go up there - and most loft ladders can be neatly folded away when you're done.

Before you purchase a loft ladder, though, we recommend taking a moment to familiarise yourself with the different types of loft ladder that are available. Here's a quick guide from Ladders UK Direct...

Step ladder tool tray

It can be difficult to stay safe on a step ladder when your hands are full. If your work requires you to use several different tools in quick succession, you may not be able to hold them all at once, and it's laborious to climb down off the ladder every time you need to change tools.

This is why many of our step ladders come with built-in tool trays. A tray at the top of the ladder makes a great place to keep tools you're not currently using, and it means you can concentrate on staying safe and getting the job done as efficiently as possible.

best ladders for painting

Whether you're freshening up a white wall or adding a bold feature wall, a fresh lick of paint is a quick and easy way to transform your living space. Finding the perfect colour and buying the right equipment is only half the battle, the real challenge comes when it's time to apply your new paint.

Time and time again, we see people using kitchen stairs, coffee tables and upturned laundry baskets to try and reach the top corners and edges. Besides looking silly, these DIY methods of elevation are unstable and often dangerous. One small wobble and you could find yourself laying on your back, covered in paint and wondering what happened.

how are extension ladders measured

Are you thinking about buying an extension ladder for an upcoming job? Not really sure what length you need? Well, here in this blog, we'll explain how extension ladders are measured to help you find the perfect length for the task at hand.

Unlike single section ladders, extension ladders are be made up of two or more moveable sections, adding an additional layer of complexity to the calculation. Just because an extension ladder is listed as being 10 metres long, you shouldn't assume that you can reach 10 metres comfortably.

When measuring an extension ladder, it's important that you take the overlap in the middle of the ladder into consideration as well as the safe working height. These aren't the only things to consider, there are all kinds of variables that can make measuring an extension ladder a bit of a difficult task. But don't worry, we're here to help!

Ladder with high weight capacity

Under to the EN131 ladder regulations, both professional and non-professional ladders must have a weight capacity of at least 150kg. This requirement is why so many of the ladders we sell have a maximum load limit of 150kg.

However, we do sell a selection of heavy-duty ladders with a higher weight capacity. If you're looking for a ladder that can support loads heavier than 150kg, step this way...

Telescopic ladder in car boot

It can be tricky to transport a ladder - if you're carrying it on the roof of your vehicle, you have to make sure it's secure, make sure it's not overhanging by too much, and make sure it doesn't damage your paint job!

Wouldn't it be nice if you could skip all that and just pop your ladder in the boot of your car? Well, as luck would have it, our telescopic ladders (when folded away) are compact enough to fit in a car with no difficulty at all.

Here's something you may notice when shopping for extension ladders on our website: different ladders have different-shaped rungs. Some rungs are round, some are square, and some are shaped like a letter 'D', with a flat top and a curved underside.

But does any of this matter? Can certain rung types only be used in specific situations? What difference does it make whether a ladder has round or square rungs?

Those are the questions we're going to answer today. Let's take a closer look at those three different rung shapes...

Ladder with square rungs

Square rungs

Square rungs have four corners and four flat sides. This is a fairly common rung type; however, many users find square rungs uncomfortable, especially when they're positioned so that one must stand on one of the corner edges while working.

We sell a wide variety of ladders here at Ladders UK Direct. As you browse our website, you may notice that a lot of our extension ladders come with a stabiliser bar included as standard.

A stabiliser bar is a horizontal bar that widens the base of the ladder to keep it from slipping. Very often, this 'foot' is integrated into the ladder's design, but stabiliser bars are also sold separately (in which case they can be attached or removed as needed).
