Ladder storage

Pictured: LadderLok ladder storage hooks

Where possible, ladders should be stored horizontally, somewhere cool and dry. You can store ladders standing up, but this is not advised due to the risk of them falling and being damaged.

If you want to keep your ladder in good condition for as long as possible, it's important to invest time and money into proper ladder storage. Improper storage may cause your ladder to deteriorate and become unsafe to use - or it could end up being stolen. Today we're going to talk to you about the correct way to store a ladder so that you can keep your ladders safe & functional for longer!

Of course, all of the ladders we offer here at Ladders UK Direct are designed to be incredibly durable, but taking an extra couple of minutes to make sure your ladders are stored correctly at the end of the day can really prolong their life expectancy. To give you an idea of where to keep your ladder, we've put together this helpful ladder storage guide.

Where should I store my ladder?

Find a place to store your ladder that will keep it out of harm's way. This could be a garage, shed, storeroom, or warehouse - the ideal ladder storage spot is somewhere that's large enough to accommodate the ladder's full length and secluded enough that people won't be constantly passing by and bumping into it.

Ladder storage racks are great for keeping your ladder safe when it's not in use. Some ladder storage racks can be mounted on the wall, while others may be placed on the roof of your storage unit. Either choice is perfectly fine - just make sure that the ladder is flush with the wall and not in danger of falling on passers-by.

We at Ladders UK Direct can provide lockable ladder storage hooks to help you secure your ladder. Visit our Ladder Accessories section for more ladder storage solutions.

What if I can't install a storage rack?

If you don't have a building or suitable place to install a ladder storage rack, you might have to make do and store your ladder somewhere else. If you have limited storage space available, we'd recommend:

  • Lay the ladder flat on the ground (somewhere out of the way - you don't want people tripping over it!)

  • Lean it up against the wall (make sure it's not at risk of toppling over)

Bear in mind that both of these methods have the potential to create safety hazards and leave your ladders vulnerable to damage. We would always advise using a ladder rack or storage hooks to keep your ladder completely off the ground if possible.

Can I store my ladder outside?

While some materials like fibreglass are fairly weather-resistant, we don't recommend storing any ladder outside for long periods of time. Keeping your leader in an outdoor environment can lead to problems such as:

  • Rust and degradation
  • Damaged plastic fittings
  • Rot (if your ladder is made of wood)
  • Corrosion of ropes
  • Theft or unauthorised use of your ladder

The best way to avoid all of this is to store your ladder indoors, preferably somewhere with suitable ventilation that won't expose your ladder to dampness.

Still unsure if your ladder is stored safely?

If you're in a rush and you don't have time to set up an entirely new ladder storage space, ask yourself these simple questions before packing your ladder away for the day:

  • Are you leaving your ladder somewhere dry?
  • Is the ladder protected from the weather?
  • Is the ladder clean and free of debris?
  • Could the ladder fall over, trip someone up, or otherwise pose a safety risk? (If so, move it!)

If you're on the hunt for a new ladder for your home or workplace, we have a wide range of ladders for you to choose from. Whether you need an extension ladder, a roof ladder or a step ladder, we can help.
